Towards COP29: Peace-Climate-Humanitarian collective action

Thursday, October 3, 2024: 12:00 - 13:30 UTC / 14:00 - 15:30 CET / 08:00 - 09:30 EST

This year, the 29th Conference of Parties (COP29) of the UNFCCC will take place in November in Baku, Azerbaijan. It will address key topics, including raising ambition for mitigation and adaptation through Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), National Adaptation Plans (NAPs) and long-term low greenhouse gas emission development strategies. Parties will work towards enabling action with the New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) and other means of implementation, as well as advancing the loss and damage through fully operationalizing both the Loss and Damage Fund  and the Santiago Network. The COP29 Presidency agenda will also include a thematic day on Peace, Relief and Recovery on 15 November.

Commitment #5 of the Climate and Environment Charter for Humanitarian Organizations encourages humanitarian organizations to work collaboratively across the humanitarian sector, and beyond, to strengthen climate and environmental action. Commitment #6 of the Charter calls on organisations to use our influence to mobilize urgent and more ambitious climate action and environment protection. Thus, COP29 offers a unique opportunity for actors across the humanitarian, climate/environment and peacebuilding sectors to come together and advocate for ambitious and concrete action.
